Bleeding after surgery

In rare cases, spontaneous, but also delayed bleeding from the wound area can occur after surgical interventions. This can be particularly the case if the patient is taking anticoagulant medication (e.g. ASA, Marcumar ...) due to an internal medical condition. In those situations, it is important to keep calm first! The amount of blood exiting usually appears larger than it actually is.

Biting with moderate pressure on a compress (possibly a tissue with a knot) can quickly remedy the situation. At the same time, moderate cooling measures from the neck and from outside of the wound area are helpful. Nosebleed after surgery in the area of the maxillary sinuses is not an uncommon effect of operations.

If, despite the measures described above, the bleeding does not stop or worse, circulatory instability occur, you should come to our practice or go to the listed clinics down below immediately. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us by phone.

Pain after surgery

You will receive a prescription or recommendation from us for a suitable pain reliever. If there are no intolerances, we recommend taking Ibuprofen 600 or Paracetamol 500. If possible, these pain relievers should be taken immediately after the local anesthesia has worn off, according to our recommendations or written in the package insert.

In addition, to cool the wound area, we recommend using wet packs in combination with the cooling pads provided by us. You can use your own cooling units as well. However, please note that frozen items should not be applied directly to the skin as it could cause injuries due to cold damage.

In case of persisting pain conditions or other complications that cannot be controlled by taking the medication or measures listed above, please contact us.
The dental and medical emergency service or the corresponding specialist clinics are available outside of our office hours. The respective facilities on duty can be found here: Dental emergency service.
