In today's modern dentistry, dental implants, meaning "artificial tooth roots" anchored in the jawbones, are established procedures for substituting lost teeth or for anchoring dentures. Implant placement and integration, even in an anatomically or medically difficult situation, are two of our core competences.
Today, more than 1 million of these "artificial tooth roots" are implanted in Germany every year. The success rate of dental implants is generally high, though it varies according to personal medical health risk and the anatomical situation. Studies find a 10-year survival rate for 95% to 99% of implants.
There are different strategies depending on the period between tooth removal and implantation.
Immediate implantation is used when an implant is placed in the socket immediately after extraction of the tooth, all in the same treatment session. In case of immediate-delayed implantation, the socket is left to heal and ossify for approximately 3 months. If the period between tooth loss and implantation increases, we refer in this case to a delayed implantation.
All 3 procedures are performed in our practice. Together with you and your dentist, we can select the procedure that best suits your individual needs.
Crucial factors for a successful implantation are the bone structure and its quality. If there is not enough bone structure, it can be reconstuct beforehand or during the simultaneous implantation (bone augmentation / augmentation). Immediate implantation may be considered when particularly favorable bone and soft tissue conditions are at hand.
You do not have to go home with a gap after tooth extraction. A careful and clever planning, usually, allows for a temporary gap closure. We are happy to discuss these and other questions with you in advance in our implantology consultation (book an appointment).
Titanium implants, or implants made of very biocompatible titanium alloys, remain the gold standard in terms of materials. However, zirconia implants are now available as an alternative, which may be beneficial in certain situations. We will choose the material and the implant manufacturer together with you and your dentist. We are familiar with almost all common implant systems and materials and have been working with an array of them for years. This ensures that your dentist can work with a system that is familiar to them.
In the case of more complex implant restorations, be it after accidents, pronounced bone loss or diseases and medications that affect the periodontium (eg: periodontitis, tumor diseases, chemotherapy, immunosuppression etc.), a more precise diagnosis may be necessary (see Precise Diagnosis). In case of very extensive and demanding implant restorations for patients with difficult pre-existing anatomy, we will perform a surgery using a special computer-aided planning software based on previously performed 3D diagnosis. The implant position is determined in the planning process and then transferred to the exact clinical situation using a drilling template.
